After almost a decade as an electric power engineer and three decades as an intellectual property and registered patent attorney, mike has added estates and trusts legal services to his law practice. Mike founded the Estates Expert Advisory together with a selection of independent professional associates with more than a combined century in their various disciplines directly related to the estates and trusts practice—Estates and Trusts Legal Services, Wealth Management, Insurance Advisory CPA, CFP, Bookkeeping, and Elder Care Concierge. This association of independent professionals offering the full spectrum of coordinated professional services required to plan and manage all types of estates adds new dimensions to estate planning and management not offered by any other association. The Estates Expert Advisory Group Model is a novel approach to holistic estate planning and implementation designed to bring the best of the various disciplines involved, by the best practitioners the industry has to offer, to each and every client. You, as a client, will be treated as we would want to be treated, and as we would, and do, treat our own family members.
First Career: Electric Power Engineer
After graduating from Georgia Tech with Bachelor of Science and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering, Mike served as a Financial Analyst and Rate Engineer in the Electric Utility Industry preparing pro-forma economic models of electric utility companies and Electric Service Rate Schedules and associated financial analyses, expert reports, power plant siting studies, environmental compliance, and licensing and construction reports for almost a decade. There at Southern Engineering Company in the 1990s he authored his first publication, the Economic Analysis section of the Rural Electric Cooperative Handbook and served on the Electric Utility Regulation Task Force leading to the Patent Reform Act of 1991. He also wrote a number of speeches and served as a traveling lecturer on the USAID Eastern European Task Force 1992-1994 presenting in Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary to report on findings and present proposals for privatizing and upgrading the electric system in the former Eastern Block.
Second Career: Intellectual Property Attorney
As an Intellectual Property and Registered Patent Attorney for 30 years, Mike obtained hundreds of domestic and international patents, trademarks and copyrights for clients across the country. Mike has served as an Expert Witness on intellectual property matters, authored scholarly publications, and participated in rulemaking proceedings. Mike served as lead and associate litigation counsel in Federal and State Courts, at administrative, trial and appellate levels. Mike has achieved technical expertise in a wide range of technologies from concrete fabrication to industrial machinery and telecommunication systems, to name just a few. Mike loves technology and continues to practice intellectual property law. He also loves financial analysis, estates and trusts law, and the people he can help as an estates and trusts attorney through the Estates Expert Advisory Group.
Expert Testimony
2009: Expert witness on the subject of patent law in Civil Action No. 2008RCCV01519, Dewey v. Powergroup International, Inc. in the Superior Court of Richmond County, Georgia. Subject matter of expert testimony concerned corporate invention development and disclosure practices, specific inventions and patent applications.
2003: Expert witness on the subject of patent law in Civil Action No. 8:01-cv-2092-T-26TGW, Mercury Enterprises, Inc. v. Ventlab Corporation, in the United States District Court, Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division. Subject matter of expert testimony concerned claim interpretation, infringement and validity of Ratner, U.S. Patent No. 5,557,049, Disposable Manometer For Use With a CPR Bag.
1986 – 1994 Southern Engineering Company Atlanta, Georgia
Engineer and consultant for electric utilities in areas of contract analysis, regulatory affairs, economic studies, accounting procedures and business practices. Experience in litigation, arbitration, rate cases, administrative proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, contract negotiation and analysis, damage computation, and legislative and rulemaking proceedings.
- Expert witness before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Hydroelectric Projects Nos. 432 and 2784 including direct testimony and cross examination.
- Preparation of direct testimony as expert witness on contract and damages analysis on behalf of North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation in arbitration and legal proceedings relating to electric power contracts.
- Speaker and advisor for the United States Agency for International Development in Eastern Europe on matters related to electric utilities.
- Advisor for the Transmission Task Force of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association charged with developing legislative and regulatory proposals culminating in the Electricity Title of the Energy Policy Act of 1992.
- Author or co-author of comments written on behalf of electric utility clients in over a dozen administrative rulemaking proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Rural Electrification Administration.
